Wings

Building on the ball skill development in Passers, Wings includes concepts of team play and field position.  LYSA Wings teams play in-house against other LYSA teams if there are enough teams.  If not, LYSA Wings teams are placed into the SAY North Wings League and play teams from sounding communities (Little Miami, West Chester, Kings, etc.)  Scores and standing are kept.

Wings is still a development program in LYSA that blends individual and team (tactical) skill development in practices.   Wings games are governed by special rules that encourage players to use ball skills they learn in practices.

GAME RULES

The Wings league uses a small field that is 55 to 65 yds long and 305 to 45 yds wide.  See FIELD DIAGRAM  below.  The goals are either 6.5' x 18.5'.  Wings follows the US Soccer rules modified for 7v7 games.  Age specific rules for 7v7 include use of a build out line, offsides, no heading and rules governing how the keeper can put the ball into play.

The game begins with a kick off at midfield.  The opposing players must stay outside of the center circle.  The ball may be kicked in any direction to begin the game.

The game has four 12-minute quarters.  Halftime is 5 minutes long.  The referee is the official timekeeper for the game.

There are unlimited substitutions during the game.  A player substitution can occur during any stoppage of play (goal kick, throw-in, corner kick, free kick).  Substitutes should stand at mid-field and wait for permission from the referee to enter the field.  The referee will restart the game when the substitution is completed.

Offsides - occurs at the buildout line not the center line

Free Kicks - There are both indirect and direct free kicks.  An indirect kick requires a second player to touch the ball before a goal can be scored. Referees signal an indirect free kick by holding an arm in the air.  A goal can be scored off of a direct free kick.  Penalty kicks are included in the rules for certain fouls inside the penalty box.  CLICK HERE for the complete rules for 7v7 games.

Throw-in - Incorrect throw-ins will result in the ball being given to the opposing team.

Corner Kicks - are used to put the ball back into play when the defending team last touches the ball before it goes across the endline.

Rules Involving the Build Out Line

The field includes a Build Out Line that is equidistant between the penalty area box and the midfield line.  A Build Out line is added to the field, it is equidistant between the penalty area line and halfway line.

  • The Build Out Line, not the midfield line, defines where an offensive player is offsides.

  • Players cannot be offside in the area between the Build Out Lines.

  • When the keeper has the ball, defending players must move back across the Build Out Line.  They cannot cross the Build Out Line until the keeper puts the ball in play by either throwing or rolling the ball or placing the ball on the ground and kicking/passing it.

  • The offensive players (team with the ball) are allowed inside the Build Out Line when the keeper puts the ball in play.

  • Defending players must move beyond the Build Out Line when a goal kick is taken.  Offensive players (team with the ball) are allowed inside the Build Out Line during a goal kick.

Rules Involving the Keeper

  • The Keeper MAY NOT PUNT THE BALL to put it back into play.  Early in the season referees may allow the Keeper to replay the ball if they punt it.  A punted ball results in an indirect free kick by the other team at the point where the punt was made.  A goal cannot be scored from an indirect free kick until the ball is touched by another player.
